Memoirs of a helicopter pilot’s combat tour in Tay Ninh, Vietnam 1968
by John J. Gillen
My book is a compilation of slightly over 100,000 very well-chosen words. But even a million words can’t begin to describe or explain what a warrior feels every second he is in a bloody battle where his comrades-in-arms (brothers) lay in pieces (or in flames) all around him. A warrior fights on to get home to those he loves and is fighting for!
In the ‘Nam many warriors owe their lives to the medic/ corpsman who kept them alive long enough until we helicopter pilots (and our crewmen) came back into that very hot LZ and picked them up and took them to the nearest MASH unit.
This is the story of my life leading up to Vietnam, my experience as a helicopter combat pilot in ‘Nam, and the journey I took afterwards.
