25 Jul 67 – Letter from Bill Bauman, CO 187th, to Chief Military History – requesting Blackhawks as Distinctive Designation 11 Aug 67 – 1st Ind by HQ DA, Chief of Military History – Approval of Blackhawks as Distinctive Designation. Certificate to follow in 60 days. 22 Dec 71 – Letter from LT Terry Ess, 187th Unit Historian, to HQ DA Chief Military History, requesting Distinctive Designation of Crusaders. Justification – unit had been known as Crusaders since 23 March of 68 and had been first AHC into Cambodia on 1 May 1970. 11 Jan 72 1st Ind from DA History Div. to 187th says Blackhawks certificate was issued on 2 Oct 1967 and if Crusaders was now desired that DA be advised and justification for proposed change be given. Obviously, the Call Sign changed in March 68, but the Distinctive Designation at DA may never have been changed. |
